Yukon Trees After the May 2024 Tornado

Tree Service in Yukon came into sharp focus on the night of May 19, 2024. The National Weather Service rated that tornado EF2 with peak winds of 125 to 130 mph and a path up to 300 yards wide, starting southwest of SW 29th Street and Radio Road and tracking northeast to near NW 10th Street and Cimarron Road, damaging homes, trees and power poles on the way. Plenty of yards still have trees that were cracked, twisted or half-stripped that night and never fully dealt with. Those are the ones we look at first.

How to judge a tree that survived a storm

A tree that lost a third or less of its crown and has no major trunk splits can often be pruned back to sound wood and kept. A tree with a split main trunk, a torn-out major limb that left a deep wound, or roots lifted on one side is usually a removal, even if it leafed out the following spring. Leafing out only shows that the tree is still alive. It tells you nothing about whether it is structurally sound. We look at the trunk, the root flare and the remaining limbs, and we tell you plainly which group your tree falls into.

Two kinds of Yukon

Yukon was founded by A.N. Spencer in 1891, incorporated in 1901, and is known as the Czech Capital of Oklahoma, with its Czech Festival held the first Saturday of October. The original town around Route 66 and Main Street has older homes and older trees. The city has also grown fast: from 23,630 residents in 2020 to an estimated 27,615 in 2025, across about 26.5 square miles. In the newer subdivisions, the trees are younger, often planted by the builder, and the most useful work is structural pruning while they are small, which costs less and prevents the weak forks that fail in wind.

Work we do around Yukon

  • Structural pruning of young subdivision trees
  • Crown reduction on large, older trees in the original town
  • Stump grinding after removals
  • Clearing tree limbs from service lines to the house
  • Cleanup on larger lots toward the edges of the city

Yukon Questions

My tree leafed out after the 2024 tornado. Does that mean it is fine?

Not necessarily. A tree with a split trunk or a large torn wound can still leaf out for years while decay works inside. Have someone look at the structure, not just the leaves.

When should young trees in a new subdivision be pruned?

The first few years are the best time. Removing competing leaders and badly angled branches while they are small takes minutes per tree and prevents the weak forks that split in wind later.

Do you work in Canadian County outside Yukon city limits?

Yes, including properties between Yukon and Piedmont and around Mustang Road. Larger rural lots often combine removals with brush and cedar clearing, and we quote that as one job.

How much of a damaged tree can be cut off before it is better to remove it?

As a rough guide, if more than about a third to half of the crown is gone, or the main trunk is split, the tree is unlikely to recover well and becomes a recurring hazard. Below that, careful cleanup pruning back to sound branches often lets it recover over a few seasons.

Who handles limbs on the power lines in Yukon?

Lines along the street belong to the utility, so report limbs on them and stay clear. The service line from the pole to the house is generally the owner's to keep clear, and that work should only be done after the power to it is shut off.
