A Small Town on Open, Windy Ground

Tree Service in Cashion deals with a landscape that is more open than the wooded towns east of I-35. Cashion lies mostly in southeastern Kingfisher County, with its town limits reaching east into Logan County, about 18 miles southwest of Guthrie. It counted 850 people in the 2020 census. The town got its start around 1900, when merchants and most residents of a hilltop settlement called Downs, about three miles south of the Cimarron River, moved half a mile south to where two railroads were joining. It incorporated in 1901 and took the name of Roy Cashion, killed on July 1, 1898, in the charge up San Juan Hill.

Trees that stand alone

On open farm country, trees grow where someone planted them or where they escaped the plow: windbreaks, fence rows, farmstead groves and creek banks. Those trees carry the full force of every wind that comes across the plains, without other trees to shelter them. They grow lopsided, drop limbs and split in storms. Most of what we do around Cashion is removing dead and broken trees from farmsteads and fence lines, and reducing the heavy side of older trees that lean over homes, shops or grain bins.

Windbreak care

Many farmsteads still have a windbreak planted decades ago. Over time, the middle rows die, cedars and volunteer elms fill the gaps, and the whole thing becomes a fire risk instead of a shelter. We can take out the dead trees, thin the volunteers and leave the strongest trees to keep doing their job. If you plan to replant, leave room between the new rows and the old ones so the young trees get light.

In town

Inside Cashion, lots are small-town size, with shade trees beside homes and along alleys. Here the work is ordinary yard tree care: lifting limbs off roofs, clearing branches from the line to the house with the power disconnected first, removing a dead tree before it falls, and grinding the stump so the yard can be mowed.

The name

Cashion is known as The Town Too Tough to Die, because it hung on when nearby towns vanished during the Great Depression. Its population bottomed out at 182 in 1950 and has climbed since. New homes going up around town often sit on bare ground, and the trees planted with them benefit from early structural pruning.

Cashion Questions

Can you clean out an old farm windbreak?

Yes. We remove dead and dying trees, thin out volunteer cedar and elm, and leave the healthy trees standing. We can do it all at once or in sections over a couple of seasons.

A tree is leaning over my shop. Does it have to come down?

Not always. If the roots and trunk are sound, cutting back the heavy side can take enough weight off that it is no longer a threat. If the roots have lifted or the trunk is cracked at the base, removal is the safer choice.

Do you work in both the Kingfisher and Logan county parts of Cashion?

Yes. We cover the whole town and the farm ground around it on both sides of the county line.

Will you grind stumps in a pasture or hay field?

Yes. We grind below the surface so equipment can pass and leave the grindings spread or piled, whichever you prefer. Mark any buried lines or tile before we arrive.

When is the best time to prune shade trees out here?

Late winter, while trees are dormant, is a good time for most pruning, because you can see the structure and the trees respond with strong growth in spring. Dead or broken limbs can come off any time of year.
