Wooded Lots Along Highway 66

Tree Service in Luther is mostly about wooded acreage. The town covers about 15.8 square miles in northeastern Oklahoma County along State Highway 66, the old U.S. 66, and it sits squarely in the Cross Timbers ecoregion. A lot of Luther homes are tucked into stands of post oak and blackjack oak, with eastern redcedar filling the understory wherever it has been left alone. Luther grew 22.2% between 2010 and 2020, to 1,492 residents,.

Why Cross Timbers oaks need a light touch

Post oak and blackjack oak have survived on these sandy, rocky hills for centuries by growing slowly and holding on. They do not like change. Grading for a new house, trenching for a water line, parking equipment under the canopy or piling soil against the trunk can all start a decline that does not show for three to five years. By the time the top thins, the damage is old. If you are planning to build or expand, call us before the dirt work, not after; we can mark which oaks are worth protecting and how far out to keep the equipment.

What the Forest Service is seeing

The U.S. Forest Service's 2025 forest health summary for Oklahoma describes the Cross Timbers as the forest type most hurt by lack of management, with overstocked stands that are declining. It also notes that a fungus called Diplodia corticola, which does well in drought, has been the pathogen most often detected on oaks in recent years, and that the October 2020 ice storm likely opened wounds that helped it in. In plain terms: crowded woods, drought, and old storm damage are working together. Thinning crowded stands and removing dead and broken oaks gives the remaining trees more water and light.

Cedar and fire

Eastern redcedar crowds out young oaks, uses a lot of water, and burns hot. The fires around Logan County in March 2025 burned more than 30,000 acres just north of here. Clearing cedar back from homes and outbuildings is the single most common job we do in Luther.

Getting around town

The Turner Turnpike bypassed Luther in 1953, and a new interchange at Hogback Road opened in 2011, making Luther easier to reach from both Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Hogback Road and Highway 66 are also how most people describe where their property sits, so give us the nearest crossroad when you call.

Typical Luther projects

  • Removing dead oaks before they fall on a home, shop or fence
  • Cedar clearing around homes and along drives
  • Thinning crowded oak stands
  • Raising canopies so trucks, mowers and fire equipment can get through
  • Stump grinding in yards and along drives

Luther Questions

We are building on a wooded lot in Luther. How do we protect the oaks?

Decide which trees you want to keep before any dirt work, then fence off as much of the root zone as you can, ideally out to the edge of the canopy. Keep equipment, fill and materials out of that area. We can walk the lot with you and your builder and mark trees and protection zones.

Several oaks on my property died over the last few years. Should I worry about the rest?

It is worth a look. Drought, crowding, old ice damage and oak fungi like Diplodia often hit stands together. Removing dead trees and thinning crowded ones gives the survivors a better chance.

Can you clear cedar without damaging the oaks I want to keep?

Yes. We cut cedar at ground level so it does not resprout, drop it away from the oaks, and keep heavy equipment off root zones wherever possible.

Do you take the brush away or chip it on site?

Either. On acreage, many owners like chips spread on trails and around trees as mulch. If you would rather have it hauled, we will include that in the quote.
