Frequently Asked Questions
Tree Service Questions
How much does tree service cost in Edmond?
Homeyou's October 2026 figures for Edmond put a medium tree removal at about $482 to $656 and trimming a medium tree at about $404 to $602. Large trees, dead wood, tight access and limbs over the house push the price up. We give you a written price after seeing the tree.
Do I need a permit to cut down a tree in Edmond?
Not at a home. The City of Edmond says no permit is currently required to prune or remove a tree on residential property. Removal on unplatted land and in nonresidential, special purpose or PUD districts does need a permit, with exemptions that include existing single-family lots and parcels under five acres.
Who is responsible for the tree between the sidewalk and the street?
In Edmond, the property owner. The city says owners are responsible for trees on their property and in the adjacent right-of-way, which usually extends 10 to 12 feet from the curb. Urban Forestry may help with a hazardous street tree case by case, so call them if a street tree looks dangerous.
Will Edmond Electric trim the tree touching my power line?
Edmond Electric prunes trees around its distribution lines, using contracted line-clearance crews and ANSI A300 practice, and notifies residents by mailer and door hanger before that work. It does not prune around the private service line to your house. Never cut a limb that touches any line yourself; call the utility first.
Why did my pine turn brown so fast?
In central Oklahoma, pine wilt is a common cause, especially in Scotch and Austrian pines. OSU Extension says needles fade to gray-green and the tree can die within weeks, usually between July and December. A lab sample through the county Extension office confirms it, and infected trees should be removed and the wood chipped, burned or buried.
Is there a tree service near me that will haul everything away?
Yes. Hauling logs and brush is a line on our quote, and so is leaving the wood if you want firewood. If you prefer to handle brush yourself, Edmond's bulk collection takes limbs cut to 4 feet or shorter and no more than 14 inches across, scheduled through Solid Waste Services.
What should I ask before hiring a tree company in Edmond?
Edmond Electric's storm guide suggests asking for local references for similar work, a written work plan, a cost estimate and expected dates, and to be wary of crews that appear right after a storm. Ask for proof of liability and workers' compensation insurance sent from the insurer. Oklahoma has no state arborist license, so if you want an ISA Certified Arborist, you can check that credential on the ISA website.
Tree Removal Questions
How much does it cost to remove a tree in Edmond?
Homeyou's October 2026 Edmond figures put a medium tree at about $482 to $656. National guides run from under $300 for a small tree to $2,000 or more for a very large one. Limbs over the house, dead wood and narrow gates raise the price. We give a written price after seeing the tree.
Do I need the city's permission to remove a tree in my yard?
No permit is currently required to remove a tree at a residence in Edmond. Permits apply to unplatted land and to nonresidential, special purpose and PUD districts. If you are in an HOA, check your covenants; some associations have their own rules on removing trees.
Should I take out a pine that turned brown this summer?
If it is a Scotch or Austrian pine, pine wilt is likely, and OSU Extension recommends confirming it and removing the tree quickly so beetles do not carry the disease to other pines. The wood should be chipped, burned or buried, and the stump ground below the soil.
Is a dead tree harder to remove?
Usually. Dead wood can snap unexpectedly under rigging loads, so climbers move more slowly or a lift is used instead. Taking a dying tree down before it is fully dead is often simpler and cheaper.
Can you remove a tree right next to my house?
Yes. That is what sectional removal is for: each piece is cut and lowered on a rope so it swings away from the roof and gutters. We note on the quote anything nearby that needs extra protection, such as an AC unit or pool equipment.
Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions
When is the right time for tree trimming in Edmond?
For storm prep on most shade trees, late fall through winter works well, after leaves drop and before ice season peaks. Dead, cracked or hanging limbs should come out whenever you find them. Spring-flowering trees such as redbuds are usually pruned right after they bloom.
How much does tree trimming cost in Edmond?
Homeyou's 2026 Edmond figures put trimming a medium tree at about $404 to $602, and pruning a large tree at about $800 to $1,000. Height, the number of cuts and access matter most. Your written quote sets the price.
Is topping a tree a good way to make it safer?
No. Topping leaves large wounds that decay and forces fast, weakly attached sprouts that break more easily in the next storm. Edmond's Urban Forestry staff advise homeowners to avoid companies that top trees. Reduction cuts back to a side branch get the size down without those problems.
Will Edmond Electric trim my trees for free?
Edmond Electric prunes trees around its distribution lines, and residents get a mailer and door hangers before the work. It does not prune around the private service line to your house, and it does not do general yard pruning.
How much can be cut off at once?
Edmond Electric's storm guide suggests not removing more than 25% of a tree's crown in a single year. Taking more stresses the tree and can trigger heavy sprouting. Overgrown trees are often brought back over two or three seasons.
Stump Grinding Questions
How much does stump grinding cost in Edmond?
Homeyou's 2026 Edmond guide gives a wide range of $75 to $1,000 depending on size and access, and Lawn Love's national figures average about $120 to $210 per stump. Large oak and pecan stumps and tight gates cost more. Your quote lists each stump separately.
Do I need to call 811 before stump grinding?
Yes. Utilities need to be located before any digging, and grinding counts. In Oklahoma the request goes through OKIE811 by calling 811. Private lines like sprinklers and pet fences are not marked, so point them out.
Will grinding stop my Bradford pear from sprouting?
Grinding removes the part of the stump that sprouts most, which helps a lot. OSU Extension notes pears resprout readily, and some roots may still send up shoots that need to be pulled or treated. Grinding beats leaving the stump to sprout.
Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?
You can, but the grindings need to come out and be replaced with soil, and old roots make digging harder. Planting a few feet to the side of the old stump is often easier and gives the new tree cleaner soil.
What do I do with the hole?
Many people keep some chips to fill the hole and top it with soil, which settles over a season. If you want to seed or lay sod right away, have the chips hauled and the hole filled with topsoil.
Emergency Storm Tree Service Questions
Who do I call first when a tree hits a power line in Edmond?
The utility. Stay away from the tree and the wire. In Edmond Electric territory, report it at (405) 216-7660; if your bill comes from another utility, call that one. Once the line is safe, we can remove the tree.
Does homeowners insurance pay for storm tree removal?
Many policies cover removing a tree that falls on a house or other covered structure, and some cover debris removal up to a limit. Trees that fall in the yard without hitting anything are often not covered. Check your policy and take photos before cleanup.
How do I know if a storm-damaged tree can be saved?
Edmond Electric's guide says trees with 25% or less crown damage usually survive with pruning, 25% to 50% need pruning and monitoring, and 50% or more usually should be removed. Broken trunks, girdling and leans of 30 degrees or more also call for removal.
Can I call at night after a storm?
You can call any time to leave details about the damage. We work through calls in order of danger, starting with trees on houses and blocked driveways, and we will tell you when a crew can get there.
Will the city pick up my storm debris?
Edmond's regular bulk collection takes limbs cut to 4 feet or shorter and up to 14 inches in diameter, scheduled through Solid Waste Services at (405) 359-4541 for a fee. For large trees, debris hauling can be included in our quote.
Cedar Removal & Lot Clearing Questions
Why are there so many cedars on my Edmond property?
Eastern redcedar is native, but grass fires once kept it in check. With fire suppressed, it has spread into the Cross Timbers and pastures across Oklahoma, and birds spread the seed. Without follow-up, new seedlings keep coming.
Will a cut cedar grow back from the stump?
Eastern redcedar generally does not resprout from a stump cut below its lowest green branches, unlike Bradford pear, which resprouts readily. New seedlings from seed are the real follow-up job.
Can I burn the cedar brush?
Oklahoma State University's guidance warns against piling cut cedar and burning it, because burning cedar throws fire brands hundreds of feet downwind. Check local burn rules and conditions, and consider chipping instead.
Do I need a permit to clear land in Edmond?
For an existing single-family home, generally not. Edmond requires a tree removal permit on unplatted land and in nonresidential, special purpose and PUD districts, with exemptions for parcels under five acres and trees within 20 feet of a structure. Check with the city before clearing a larger undeveloped tract.
How much does it cost to clear an acre?
National guides put lightly wooded land at roughly $580 to $2,100 an acre and heavily wooded land at $3,300 to $5,600. Dense cedar, slopes, creek banks and the number of trees to keep all change the price. We quote after walking the land.
Tree Health & Risk Assessments Questions
My oak's bark is peeling off in patches. What is it?
On post and blackjack oaks after drought, hypoxylon canker is a common cause; the bark falls away to show a dusty brown, silver or black crust. OSU Extension says there is no effective control and recommends removing infected trees. Peeling bark has other causes too, so it is worth a look.
Can a pine with pine wilt be saved?
No. OSU Extension says pesticides do nothing once a tree is infected. Confirm it with a sample through your county Extension office, remove the tree promptly, and consider preventive injections or replacement species for nearby pines.
Does Edmond have anyone who will look at my tree for free?
Yes. The city's Urban Forestry department offers on-site consultations for residents within city limits; call (405) 359-4759. The city does not recommend vendors or work on private trees, but its advice is a good second opinion.
Is cabling worth it for a split fork?
Sometimes. Cabling can reduce the chance that a weak fork fails on a sound, valuable tree, but it does not fix decay and it needs periodic inspection. On a Bradford pear or a tree with a deep crack, removal is usually the better choice.
Is emerald ash borer in Edmond?
As of 2026 it has been confirmed in nine Oklahoma counties, and Oklahoma County is not one of them. Forestry officials ask people not to move firewood and to burn it where they get it. If you have ash trees, watch for thinning tops and woodpecker damage on the bark.
