Trees as Old as the Neighborhoods

Tree Service in Warr Acres often means dealing with trees that were planted, or left standing, when the neighborhoods were new. Clyde B. Warr began developing the Warr Acres additions in 1937, and in February 1948 residents of 11 additions, including Putnam City, petitioned to incorporate. By 1979 the town had grown to almost three square miles. A yard tree planted by the first owner of a late-1940s house is now 70 or more years old, and many of the fast-growing species popular back then are reaching the end of their life.

What the ground is like

Warr Acres sits in the Sandstone Hills region, where native forest is blackjack oak and post oak. Where those oaks were left standing during building, they tend to be the oldest trees on the street. They are slow-growing and tough in drought, but they react badly to root damage from sewer work, new driveways or soil piled against the trunk. A post oak can take years to show decline after a root injury, so when we see thinning at the top of an old oak, the first question we ask is what was dug near it.

Along MacArthur and Route 66

The town centers on North MacArthur Boulevard, and its shopping districts line MacArthur, Northwest Expressway and NW 39th Street, the old Route 66. Homes back up to commercial lots in many places, and trees along those rear property lines often get no attention until a limb lands on a fence or a roof. If you share a line with a business, it is worth checking whether a dead tree is yours or theirs before it fails.

When to call

  • A large limb is hanging over the roof and you can see a crack where it joins the trunk
  • Woodpeckers are working a trunk heavily, which often means insects in decaying wood
  • An oak has dead branches at the top while the lower crown still has leaves
  • A tree is touching or rubbing the service wire to your house
  • A pine has turned brown over a few weeks in late summer or fall

Renters and landlords

Census data from the 2020 count shows about 40% of Warr Acres households rent. If you are a tenant, the owner normally decides on and pays for tree work, so send them the estimate. If you own rentals, we can quote several addresses at once and schedule them together.

Wind and tornadoes

Warr Acres sits in the middle of Tornado Alley. The bigger, more frequent threat to trees here is straight-line wind and ice, and the defense is the same: remove dead wood and reduce weight on the limbs that would hit something if they broke.

Tree Removal in Edmond, OK

Warr Acres Questions

Why is my old oak dying from the top down?

Top dieback in an old post or blackjack oak is often a delayed reaction to root damage, drought stress or soil changes near the trunk. It does not always mean the tree must come out right away, but dead limbs at the top should be removed before they fall. We can look at it and tell you whether it is worth keeping.

I rent my house. Who pays for tree trimming?

That depends on your lease, but in most cases the property owner decides and pays for tree work. We can send the written estimate straight to your landlord.

A tree on the business lot behind me is dead. What can I do?

Start by contacting the property owner or manager in writing and describing the hazard. You can usually trim limbs that hang over your side yourself or through us. If the trunk is theirs, they need to approve its removal.

Can a stump be ground if I plan to put in a new tree nearby?

Yes. We grind below the surface and pull the chips back so you can fill with topsoil. Plant the new tree a few feet away from the old stump spot, because the decaying roots underneath will settle over the next couple of years.
