An Older City on the West Edge of the Metro
Tree Service in Bethany starts with the age of the place. Bethany was founded on July 28, 1909, as a community for members of the Church of the Nazarene, incorporated in 1910, and grew around what is now Southern Nazarene University. The city covers about 5.23 square miles, is bordered on the west by Lake Overholser and the Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge, and on the east by Warr Acres. Much of the housing is decades old, and so are the trees that shade it.
Bethany also knows storms better than most towns. On November 19, 1930, an F4 tornado killed 23 people and destroyed 652 buildings here, one of only three documented violent November tornadoes in Oklahoma since 1900. Today's threat is more often wind and ice: during the June 13, 1998 storms the National Weather Service measured a 70 mph gust two miles southwest of Bethany, and the October 2020 ice storm brought down limbs across the metro while trees still had their leaves.
A different mix near the lake
The neighborhoods closest to Lake Overholser and the North Canadian River bottom tend to carry more fast-growing bottomland trees, such as cottonwood, than the upland streets, where you see more planted shade trees and pines. Bottomland trees grow fast, and fast-growing wood tends to be weak, so big cottonwoods near homes deserve a regular look. The upland yards have their own issue: Scots and Austrian pines, which OSU Extension lists as highly susceptible to pine wilt, a disease common along and east of the I-35 corridor.
Who we work for in Bethany
Census figures show only about 53% of Bethany homes are owner-occupied, the lowest share among the west-side cities we cover. That means we often work with landlords, property managers and long-term tenants as well as homeowners. We can send an itemized estimate to whoever is paying, schedule work around a tenant's day, and photograph the finished job for an owner who lives elsewhere.
Typical work along the 39th Street corridor
- Removing dead or storm-damaged trees behind older homes and rentals
- Thinning and raising trees that block sidewalks or the street
- Cutting back limbs from roofs and service lines
- Stump grinding so yards can be mowed and reseeded
- Clearing overgrown fence lines of volunteer elm, hackberry and cedar
Bethany's main route in and out is the 39th Street Expressway, part of historic Route 66, and most of our trucks come in along it. Call (405) 679-3042 and tell us the cross streets; we will set a time to look at the trees and leave a written quote. Get a free estimate

Bethany Questions
Are cottonwoods near the lake dangerous to keep?
Not automatically, but they grow fast, get very large and tend to drop big limbs, especially as they age or after root damage. A cottonwood that leans toward a house or has dead limbs high up should be looked at. Sometimes reducing weight is enough; sometimes removal is the safer call.
I manage a rental in Bethany. Can you deal with the tenant directly?
Yes. Give us the tenant's contact and we will set the visit with them, send the estimate to you, and confirm when the work is finished. We can also quote several properties at once.
How do I tell if my pine has pine wilt?
Needles on a few branches fade to a gray-green, wilt and turn brown while staying on the tree, often between July and December. OSU Extension says infected trees can die in as little as three weeks and recommends prompt removal. The county Extension office can test a sample.
What happens to the wood after a removal in Bethany?
Brush goes through the chipper on site and the chips and logs leave with us, unless you want to keep firewood or a pile of chips for your beds. If a storm has the city running a debris pickup, we can also cut wood to the pickup rules and stack it where you want if that saves you money.
