Big Lots in the Cross Timbers

Tree Service in Choctaw is shaped by space. The city covers about 27 square miles with roughly 12,000 residents, which comes out to fewer than 450 people per square mile. In practice, many homes sit on an acre or more, often surrounded by native woods. Census figures put the owner-occupied rate at 87.5% and the median home value at $242,100. Owners here usually have more trees than they can keep up with, and plenty of room for the problems to hide.

A long history

Choctaw grew up on land John S. Muzzy claimed in the 1889 land run, got a post office in early 1890 and was chartered as a town in 1893, making it the oldest chartered town in Oklahoma Territory. Despite the name, it has no historical or governmental ties to the Choctaw Nation. It is about 10 miles east of Oklahoma City and sits in the Cross Timbers ecoregion, with annual precipitation around 40.8 inches, wetter than the city to the west.

Grass fire country

The eastern edge of Oklahoma County is no stranger to wind-driven fire. In March 2011, a fire near Harrah burned about 1,500 acres and damaged dozens of homes, and residents of a square-mile area east of Midwest City were told to leave, with wind gusts over 40 mph. More recently, on July 30, 2026, residents near N. Anderson Road and NE 26th Street in Choctaw were evacuated from their homes while a large grass fire was contained by several agencies. The common thread is cedar, brush and grass right up against homes and outbuildings. The most useful tree work many Choctaw owners can do is clearing a defensible space: removing cedars near the house, raising the lower limbs of oaks, and cleaning out dead brush.

Keeping the right trees

Not every tree on a wooded lot needs to go. Large, healthy post oaks and blackjack oaks give shade, hold soil and have survived a century of drought. We help you sort the trees into three groups: keep and prune, watch, and remove now. Then we price the remove-now group first, so you are spending money where it matters most.

Typical Choctaw projects

  • Cedar removal around homes, shops and barns
  • Dead oak removal near drives, fences and buildings
  • Canopy raising so trucks and mowers can get through
  • Lot and trail clearing on overgrown acreage
  • Removing storm-damaged trees after wind or ice
  • Stump grinding in yards and mowed areas

What happens to the wood

On acreage, chips can be spread on trails and around trees as mulch, and logs can be cut to firewood length and stacked. If you would rather have everything hauled off, that is in the quote too.

Choctaw Questions

How do I make my Choctaw property safer from grass fires?

Start closest to the house. Remove cedars and dead brush near the home and outbuildings, raise the low limbs of oaks so ground fire cannot climb into them, and keep the area around the house mowed. Then work outward in stages. We can mark a plan with you on site.

Is it worth keeping the old oaks on my land?

Usually, yes, if they are sound. Mature post and blackjack oaks are hard to replace and handle drought well. We remove dead wood, check for decay, and only recommend removal when a tree is failing or threatening something.

Can you clear a trail or a building site through the woods?

Yes. We flag the route or footprint with you, remove the trees and brush in it, and grind stumps where they would be in the way. We try to save good oaks along the edges.

Do you chip brush on site?

Yes. Chipped brush makes good mulch for trails and beds on acreage. If you would rather we haul it, we will include that in the quote.
