Tree Work in Northeast Logan County

Tree Service in Langston is mostly rural work on a small-town scale. Langston sits on State Highway 33, about 11 miles northeast of Guthrie, and counted 1,619 residents in the 2020 census. Edward P. McCabe founded it on April 22, 1890, as a town for Black settlers, and named it for John Mercer Langston, a Black congressman from Virginia. It is one of about fifty Black towns and settlements founded in Oklahoma between 1865 and 1920, and it is home to Langston University, the only historically Black college in Oklahoma, created by territorial law in 1897.

The land around Langston

Langston lies in northeastern Logan County. Like the country around Guthrie, it is rolling Cross Timbers ground: post oak and blackjack oak on the slopes and eastern redcedar moving into any pasture that is not mowed, grazed or burned. On a typical property here, the trees worth keeping are the big oaks near the house and along the drive. The trees causing the problems are the dead ones and the cedars crowding in underneath them.

Fire is part of the picture

The March 2025 wildfires east and southeast of Guthrie burned more than 30,000 acres and destroyed at least 113 homes, and relief supplies were handed out at the Langston Farmers Market. Anyone who owns acreage in this part of the county has heard the same advice since then: clear dense cedar and brush back from homes and outbuildings, and do not let tree limbs hang over the roof. That is work we do every week, and it can be done in stages if the budget is tight.

What we usually do in and near Langston

  • Remove dead and dying oaks before they fall on a house, fence or drive
  • Clear redcedar from around homes, barns and fence lines
  • Raise the lower limbs of oaks so fire and mowers can pass beneath
  • Take down storm-broken trees and clean up the brush
  • Grind stumps in yards and along driveways
  • Prune shade trees around homes in town

Wood and brush

On rural property, most owners would rather keep the firewood and have the brush chipped or piled for burning under the county's rules than pay to haul it all away. Tell us what you prefer when we come out. If you plan to burn a pile, check for burn bans first; Oklahoma counties issue them often during dry, windy stretches.

Langston Questions

Do you come out as far as Langston?

Yes. We work across Logan County, including Langston and the rural roads around it. Bigger jobs and several trees at once make the trip most worthwhile, so tell us everything you want looked at.

Is it worth removing cedars if they are not hurting anything yet?

Usually, yes. Cedars spread fast, crowd out oaks and pasture, and burn hot. Removing them while they are small is far cheaper than clearing a thicket later.

Can you leave the firewood?

Yes. We cut it to the length you want and stack it where you tell us. Leaving the wood usually brings the price down.

An old oak in my yard is losing big limbs. Should it come out?

Not always. Large oaks often shed dead limbs as they age, and removing the deadwood and reducing a heavy side can keep a tree going for many more years. If the trunk is hollow at the base, mushrooms are growing from the roots, or the tree has started to lean, removal is usually the safer option. We will tell you which we see.

Can you work on a property I own in Langston but do not live on?

Yes. Many lots around town belong to family members who live elsewhere. We can meet a relative or neighbor on site, or walk it alone and send photos with the written estimate.
